WHALE WATCHING
From July to December whales can be seen at the shores of South Africa. Approximately an hour and a half away from Cape Town is the seaside town of Hermanus. A popular holiday destination for tourists and locals alike, Hermanus is hailed as offering the best land based whale watching in the world. From May onwards Southern Right Whales pay homage to these warm, shallow waters in order to calf their young and to mate. The best time for whale watching is between August and November and at this time the bay is dotted with whales. More often than not, they're more than happy to put on a performance
CLOVELLY GOLF COURSE
Nestled in the pristine and tranquil Silvermine Valley close to Fish Hoek in Cape Town lies Clovelly Country Club. HIKING
There are plenty of opportunities for walking and hiking in and around Cape Town from gentle strolls to more strenuous day-hikes. Table Mountain, Devils Peak and Lions Head all provide fairly easy hiking and are within easy reach of the city centre. There are various other routes which lead to the top of Table Mountain, some start in Kirstenbosch Gardens as well as at Constantia Nek. There is also easy walking in both Newlands and Tokai forests, or visit Silvermine Nature Reserve at the top of Ou Kaapse Weg for trails leading to Elephants Eye.
CONSTANTIA WINE ROUTE
Constantia is the birthplace of the wine farming industry in South Africa. As you drive through the beautiful historical valley it is no wonder the first Governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel, chose this situation for his farm, Constantia. Groot Constantia Estate is where the roots of the South African wine industry lie and it is the oldest wine producing farm in South Africa. It was developed by Simon van der Stel in 1685. Since then, Groot Constantia has had an uninterrupted record of being a wine farm and its name is forever linked to the most famous wines that were made in South Africa.
Groot Constantia produces a range of wines, excelling in reds as well as whites. The Estate has won numerous awards for its wines, and has done so consistently. Today visitors to Groot Constantia are also welcomed by the tranquility and beauty which charmed Simon van der Stel so much.
The Manor House, with its elegant gables, today houses a cultural history museum which portrays the early years of Groot Constantia. The Cloete Cellar, dating back to 1791, the original wine cellar, houses a display of drinking vessels and wine making equipment. Its beautiful pediment gable, by sculptor Anton Anreith, recently restored, is not to be missed. Wine may be tasted and bought at the tasting cellar at the entrance of the Estate which also houses a souvenir and gift shop.
CHAPMANS PEAK DRIVE
Chapman's Peak Drive is one of the most spectacular coastal roads in South Africa. It starts at the picturesque fishing harbor of Hout Bay and then winds up to Chapman's Point, revealing breathtaking views of the sandy bays down below, until the road reaches sea level again at Noordhoek. Built between 1915 and 1922, this stretch was blasted into the partially vertical rock and is a masterpiece of road construction. There are numerous parking bays and picnic spots along the road and on the slopes. A hiking trail with beautiful views leads to the Chapman's Peak (3 to 4 hours time needed; take water along).
2 OCEANS AQUARIUM
The Cape sits at the meeting place of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, and over 3,000 sea animals from both oceans are showcased in the aquarium, highlighting the diversity of marine life found in the waters around Cape Town. The Two Oceans Aquarium is one of the city's top attractions and visitors of all ages will be fascinated by the variety of exhibits, such as the Predator Exhibit, featuring large sharks and rays, a kelp forest, and animals such as seals, penguins and turtles among thousands of different fish. It is also possible to dive with the ragged-tooth sharks, or in the kelp forest while feeding hundreds of fish, but advanced booking is required and divers must present dive qualifications.
V&A WATERFRONT
This working harbour, historical site and shopping and entertainment development has become one of Cape Town's most visited tourist attractions. The waterfront offers everything from shopping malls, and arts and crafts markets, to live music, cinemas, buskers and a variety of festivals throughout the year. There are also more than 70 eateries ranging from pubs and fast food outlets to five star restaurants, luxury hotels, and a variety of boat trips, harbor cruises and helicopter charters. The Two Oceans Aquarium is the largest of its kind in Africa and is an impressive display of life in the oceans surrounding the Cape Coast.
NEWLANDS CRICKET GROUND
Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town is a South African cricket ground. It's the home of the Cape Cobras, who play in the SuperSport Series, MTN Domestic Championship and Standard Bank Pro20 competitions. It is also a venues for Test matches. Newlands is regarded as one of the most beautiful cricket grounds in the world, being overlooked by Table Mountain and Devil's Peak. It is close to Newlands Stadium, which is a rugby union and football venue.
The ground hosted its first Test match in March 1889 when England defeated South Africa by an innings and 202 runs. As of June, 2006, there have been 40 Test matches played at the ground of which South Africa has won 13, their opponents 19 and 8 which ended in a draw. The last team besides Australia to beat South Africa there was New Zealand, in 1961.
The first One Day International played at the ground was in December 1992 when South Africa beat India by 6 wickets. As of June, 2006, there have been 28 One-day Internationals played at the ground including five in the 2003 Cricket World Cup. South Africa has won 19 of its games.Over the past five years numerous changes have been made to the ground. This has slightly taken away from its former splendor. Large portions of the grass embankments have been replaced by pavilions increasing the seating capacity to 25,000. Newlands is one of the few cricket grounds in South Africa that tends to favor spinners. Most grounds tend to favor pacemen or batsmen, but the Western Cape has had a history of having very good spinners, a recent example being Paul Adams.
NEWLANDS RUGBY STADIUM
Newlands Stadium is located in the leafy suburb of Newlands, Cape Town, South Africa. The decision to buy the ground the stadium stands on was made by the Western Province Rugby and Football Union in 1888. The first official matches were played at Newlands on Saturday 31 May 1890 when Villager and Stellenbosch met in such muddy conditions that the curtain-raiser between Bishops and Hamiltons had to be cancelled.
The records show that the university side won by a ‘goal to a try’ – the ‘goal’ was described by the legendary Fairy Heatlle as ‘the most remarkable dropped kick I have seen’. The famous ground was to see many more such unforgettable moments. Newlands is currently the home ground of the Stormers Super 14 side as well as the Western Province who play in the Currie Cup. The Ajax Cape Town soccer club also plays it's home games here. The stadium currently has a capacity of 50,900 people and is an all seater venue.
KIRSTENBOSCH NATIONAL BOTANICAL GARDENS
Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens, situated on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, is a horticultural haven not to be missed. Kirstenbosch, 10 minutes by car from Ansela´s Place in the Cape Town suburb of Newlands, is entirely indigenous and is home to more than 8 500 plant species. Another Top Ten Western Cape Attraction, this splendid 528 hectare botanical garden was established nearly a century ago in 1913.
Today it showcases the full splendor of the unique Cape Floristic Kingdom and its varied fynbos (fine bush). There’s also an impressive cycad collection and more than 150 bird species visit the gardens. Take a picnic or enjoy a meal at one of the restaurants. In summer there are sunset concerts on Sunday afternoons and the annual New Year´s Eve party is always quite an event. You can also climb the Mountain from here - the best and most shaded is Skeleton Gorge with its woody ravines and ladders.
TABLE MOUNTAIN
Table Mountain is Cape Town’s most famous icon and, as part of the Western Cape Floral Kingdom, was declared a World Heritage Site in 2004. Towering over the city, the mountain is visible from 200km out at sea and is often covered with clouds - we call it the tablecloth. Table Mountain is home to more than 1 470 species of plant - more than in the entire United Kingdom. 200 of them are found nowhere else. The Table Mountain Cableway, allows you to take a trip to the top to enjoy the spectacular views of Cape Town.
Cameras compulsory. For the more energetic, there are a number of walks on or up the mountain, ranging from easy to adventurous. Table Mountain also offers rock climbing routes at various grades - as well as the opportunity, for the brave, to abseil off it... no wonder it’s a Top Ten Western Cape attraction.
